What is Pyelonephritis ?

One or both kidneys can get infected with pyelonephritis, a kind of urinary tract infection. Either a virus or bacteria could be infecting them. It needs to be treated since it can make patients feel really ill. This condition needs to be treated as soon as possible because this might impact the kidney function to a great extent that becomes detrimental to one’s health. If such conditions stay prevalent, they need to be tackled with a holistic and positive approach.

An unexpectedly serious kidney infection is known as acute pyelonephritis. It enlarges the kidneys and may harm them irreversibly. A pyelonephritis flare-up could be fatal. Chronic pyelonephritis is the term used to describe the illness when attacks happen frequently or persistently. Although the chronic variety is uncommon, children and those with urinary blockages are more likely to experience it.

What are the signs and symptoms of Pyelonephritis?

Following signs and symptoms are generally observed when an individual is experiencing a condition like Pyelonephritis.

  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Blood in urine
  • Frequent and painful urination
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Pain in abdomen or back
  • Foamy urine

What are the causes of Pyelonephritis?

Typically, the infection begins as a urinary tract infection (UTI) in the lower urinary tract. Through the urethra, bacteria enter the body, grow, and eventually make their way up to the bladder.

The bacteria then proceed to the kidneys via the ureters. The infection is frequently caused by bacteria like E. coli. But any severe blood infection has the potential to go to the kidneys and induce acute pyelonephritis.

Following factors also increase the risk of developing pyelonephritis:

  • People with chronic kidney conditions
  • Weak immune system
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
  • Those with enlarged prostate
  • Use of catheters
  • Urinary tract infection related surgeries
  • Some specific medications
  • Diagnosis of Pyelonephritis: The diagnosis of pyelonephritis can be done through the following methods. Some of them have been mentioned below.
  • Ultrasound or CT Scan: These tests can help detect cysts, tumors, or other obstructions in the urinary tract. If a patient doesn't improve after 72 hours of medication, a CT scan—with or without injectable dye—may be prescribed to identify urinary tract blockages.
  • Urine Tests: A physician will check for typical symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain. They will request a urine test if they suspect a kidney infection. This test helps examine the urine for pus, blood, germs, and concentration.
  • Radioactive Imaging: If your doctor suspects that pyelonephritis is causing scarring, they might perform a dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) test. This test involves injecting a radioactive material to track imaging of the kidneys.

What are the complications of Pyelonephritis?

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is one of the more significant complications of acute pyelonephritis. Other complications include sepsis, renal vein thrombosis, papillary necrosis, and the formation of renal or perinephric abscesses.

Prevention of Pyelonephritis

One of the greatest strategies for young, healthy women who are not yet menopausal to prevent acute pyelonephritis is to concentrate on preventing urinary tract infections, which are one of the more frequent predisposing causes.

Pyelonephritis can be prevented by taking the same precautions as a urinary tract infection, such as cleaning the urethral meatus after sexual activity, using estrogen, increasing fluid intake and frequency of urination, and voiding after sexual activity.

Pyelonephritis Treatment in Ayurveda

Due to their ability to maintain normal pH, which reduces the bacterial effect, the herbal approach and ayurvedic medicine for pyelonephritis are effective treatments. Such infections are managed with the help of Gokshura, Punarnava, Varuna, Guduchi, and so on.

Ayurveda suggests and promotes good bacteria while opposing harmful ones to restore the body's bacterial balance in a natural and easy way. In Ayurvedic illnesses, treatment for urine infections includes washing out infections through detoxification, clearing obstructions in the urinary tract, and giving medicines that tone the kidneys and restore proper Apana Vayu function.

Toxins are removed and the body, mind, and awareness are purified through the holistic approach. Overall wellness, self-healing, and general health are all improved by this approach. This therapy has been shown to provide the desired outcomes for UTI infections while also aiding in the body's renewal.

Incorporate yoga poses like Dhanurasana (bow pose), Setu Bhanda Sarvangasana (bridge pose), and Bhujangasana (cobra pose) that focus on the kidney and abdominal area. The genito-urinary organs perform better and the kidneys are massaged and toned with their assistance.
