Most Common Cancer in Men: What the Numbers Say
Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the world, followed by prostate cancer that is leading in many countries. Your location and the prevalence of smoking in your region matter greatly when it comes to this matter.
Don't worry, this won't be a gloomy topic. You can also learn about how some people see Ayurvedic treatment for cancer as supportive care of cancer. Grab some tea and let's make sense of it together.
The Big Names
In the CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians (2024), Bray et al. reported the GLOBOCAN 2022 statistics on cancer diagnoses. Globally, lung cancer was the most diagnosed type of cancer among men followed by prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. However, in the US, Siegel et al., in the same journal (2024), mentioned prostate cancer as the most common type in men.
Type | Where it tops the chart | Fun-but-serious note
Lung | Worldwide, and in many parts of Asia | Tobacco's most unwelcome gift
Prostate | US, UK and much of Europe | Small gland, big drama
Colorectal | 3rd place in many cases; uncomfortable to talk about, easy to test |
Why Men Are Often Hit Harder
Men tend to smoke more, drink more, and visit doctors less. Many of them prefer to limp for six months instead of getting an appointment. Some of the risk factors are:
- Tobacco use (the biggest one, by far)
- Heavy alcohol consumption
- Family history
- Age (risk increases after age 50)
- Excess weight and little physical activity
- Workplaces and employees were exposed to some chemicals or dust.
The study was carried out by Doll and colleagues and published in the BMJ (2004). They studied British doctors for 50 years and demonstrated that lifelong smokers lose about 10 years of life and that quitting is beneficial at any age.
